Gould Athletes are First in the East at Sunday River

On November 1, Gould Academy’s competitive snow sports athletes, coaches, and employees enjoyed an exclusive snow day at Sunday River in a unique “First in the East” event. From 12 to 2 p.m., this dedicated group of skiers and riders took to the mountain to kick off their training season in unseasonably warm, spring-like conditions—complete with a little bit of everything on the terrain.
“It was super exciting to get some turns in today,” said internationally ranked snowboard cross racer Hanna Percy ’25 from Truckee, California. “We’re so lucky that Sunday River has snow and invited us so we could be the first back on the hill!”

Sunday River’s ability to pull off this special event resulted from impressive teamwork and advanced snowmaking. Remarkably, the resort opened for outdoor lift service before any other resort in the Northeast, despite temperatures soaring to an unusual 70 degrees. This incredible achievement was made possible by Sunday River’s dedicated snowmaking crew, resilient team, and top-of-the-line snowmaking technology, allowing Gould’s athletes an early jumpstart on their season.

"This early opportunity is very exciting for us," said Mark Godomsky, Dean of Athletics at Gould Academy. "It marks the symbolic start of our season, allowing our competitive snow sports teams to get on snow and honoring our strong partnership with Sunday River."

The event brought Gould athletes together, igniting team spirit and anticipation and setting a powerful tone for what’s to come this season. Gould Academy expresses its gratitude to Sunday River for making this day possible and for continuing to support Gould’s snow sports community with exceptional experiences.

“It was great to get out there today, we had so much fun,” said Magnus Kearney ’25, a freestyle skier from Southport, Connecticut. “It’s amazing that Sunday River opened in October, even before Arapahoe Basin and Killington.”

As the first resort to open in the Northeast, Sunday River has once again proven its commitment to innovation and excellence in snow sports. Gould Academy looks forward to many more days on the slopes with their long-time partner as they head into what promises to be an exciting season.
