Gould Academy’s origins were as a town academy created to provide high school education for local Bethel students. Resulting from a bequest from Pastor Daniel Gould, the Academy was renamed from Bethel Academy to Gould’s Academy at Bethel, though the school’s purpose remained to educate mostly local and some regional boarding students.
The 1968-1969 school year marked the transition from a town academy to an independent boarding and day school, but our commitment to our neighbors has never ceased. Gould Academy’s early history makes being a part of Maine’s Town Tuition program a natural fit, aiming to make academic excellence accessible to Maine students.
In 1969, Gould transitioned from a town academy to an independent boarding and day school. This shift expanded opportunities for students from across the state and beyond while preserving its strong connection to Maine families.
Today, Gould participates in Maine’s Town Tuition Program, making a transformative education accessible to more Maine students.
