Reflecting on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

At Gould, what makes you unique is what brings us all together.

Today, the Gould community came together to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day of reflection and learning. A highlight of the day was an assembly led by DEIB Coordinator and Academic Skills teacher Julia Tatsch and Director of Admissions Elisa Lellios, who spoke about the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. and the possibilities of his dream. They invited the community to reflect on how the actions of those who came before us influence our lives today and how we, in turn, can shape a more just and equitable future here at Gould and beyond.
“We are invited every day to create community,” said Lellios. “To create something new so that we can influence those who will come after us—and impact the experience of those with us.”

The topics explored in the assembly will continue throughout the week in academic classes. History and Ethics students will study key civil rights topics, while English classes will discuss Gould’s draft DEIB Statement, attempting to distill it down to its core meaning.

On Tuesday evening, History Department Chair Nancy Barstow will address students and faculty during sit-down dinner, sharing the powerful legacy of civil rights pioneer John Lewis. Seated with their advisory groups, students will consider how Lewis’s work and leadership remain an enduring source of inspiration for creating change.

Today’s events were a reminder of Gould’s commitment to fostering an inclusive, thoughtful community where students can learn from the past and be inspired to create a brighter future.

“I urge you this week–make a small goal for yourself,” said Tasch in closing. “Get to know someone new—bridge a language barrier, a racial barrier, a gender barrier by just sitting somewhere new and having a conversation with someone you haven’t before. It’s that simple.”
