Wrestling with Poetry

March 7, 2013

A scene from the winter trimester.

Four students from the U.S., China, and Turkey are huddled around a table in the small  conference room on the third floor of Hanscom Hall. They are trying to decipher Native American poet Leslie Marmon Silko’s  poem, “Deer Song”, for Ms. Rothacker’s English class.

On her paper, Belis has some notes written by the last stanza of the poem. She has translated it into Turkish to see if it helps her understand.

She says it doesn’t and dives back into dialogue with the other students.
