“Welcome to Chengdu! Welcome to our school!”
The group gathered at the school at 7:45 am and tales of the first night with host families were shared. We hustled off to classes– students joined their hosts, and Tom and I taught our own classes (mine was an exciting presentation on the binomial expansion theorem and the transformation of toolkit functions… a winner in any language). Next was a formal welcoming ceremony with 4,000+ students lined up. Each Gould student received an official school uniform.
An hour and a half of Chinese paper cutting with the art teacher was a nice creative respite before we headed off to the Wuhou Shrine and some shopping on Jinli Street, a tourist attraction in the center of the city. The meeting spot for the bus trip back to the school was Starbucks– a familiar landmark worldwide.
The day ended with English Corner, an opportunity for CEFLS students to engage our students in conversation. The energy was high as topics ranged from sports to school to Justin Bieber.
Tomorrow we head off to Leshan to see the giant Buddha!
