‘Twas the week before Christmas…”
“The dog was reclined by the staircase with glee
In hopes that the holiday soon it would be”
Remember when you were a kid, and Christmas was by far the most exciting event of the year? In the days leading up until the holiday your excitement would build until Christmas Eve, when it would become so unbearable that you were sure you would not be able to sleep a wink that night. Now, I still get excited about Christmas, but I can say that I am not the one in my family who is the most excited. My dog Grizzly may have me beat in that department.
A few years ago, Grizzly discovered that Christmas, for him, means everything that he loves in life: biscuits, rawhide treats, you name it. He still hasn’t figured out how to unwrap the gifts; he’s not the most savvy when it comes to…well…most things. But, he has a good memory. He knows what’s up when we start taking out the Christmas decorations. My family has a habit, or let’s call it a tradition, of not putting up the Christmas tree until the last moment. That’s because it usually involves going out into the woods behind our house, cutting down a 40-foot-tall tree, taking the very top off, and dragging it back to the house. This year, we didn’t have to go to so much trouble because we found a perfect tree that had already fallen down. We finally put up the tree today. We still haven’t decorated it yet, but hey, it’s a step in the right direction.
Anyway, every year Grizzly will see the Christmas decorations coming out and he will immediately fly into a frenzy of excitement. When my mom puts up the stockings he will station himself beneath them and commence to stare at them longingly. It will become difficult to tear him away from these symbolic vessels of doggie Christmas joy. Unfortunately, we have been unsuccessful in communicating to him that those stockings will not be full until Christmas morning, no matter how long he stares at them.
I hope you are as excited for this holiday as Grizzly is, although I think that may be an impossible feat. And may Santa bring you all the best biscuits and bacon treats it has to offer!
