The True Meaning of Thanksgiving

November 23, 2012

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

So, for this year’s Turkey Day, I was sitting on a plane traveling down south to visit my mother’s parents. I woke up Thursday morning at 4:30 and headed to the airport. My plane boarded at 6:30 or so.  From there, I connected through Atlanta, landed in Savannah and finally made it to Hilton Head.

By traveling on Thursday, the Thanksgiving celebration has been postponed to Friday. But, that doesn’t even matter. Here in America, Thanksgiving is being overlooked more and more, year after year. Once the candy has been passed out for Halloween, people are already narrowing their focus right to Christmas. Black Friday has ruined this fantastic holiday of Thanksgiving. Instead of enjoying a day that brings you together with your loved ones and reminds you to give “thanks” for various things in your life, everyone seems to be thinking about shopping.

As you all reflect on last night’s meal, I’m asking you to stop and really, truly think about what you are thankful for. I know I am thankful for a place to live, good food to eat, family, friends, the opportunity to go to Gould, and all the other wonderful things in my life.

I’m asking you all to fight back against the Black Friday influences around you and fully enjoy this brief holiday before Christmas. Be thankful for everything you take for granted because there are many less fortunate out there who would love to be sitting where you are.

Until Next Time,
