This week I’m going to share with you a special group that I am affiliated with here in the Bethel community: the Bethel Fire Department (BFD). I joined the department this past March after I turned sixteen, which is the youngest age you can join. Ever since then, I have fallen in love with it. I would say I have been to roughly twenty-five calls. They have varied from false smoke alarms, car crashes, hay bales catching on fire, and even structure fires.
If you asked me what made me want to join, I couldn’t even attempt to tell you. But, it is one of the smartest choices I have ever made. One of the best parts is the community that we have up at the Station. Since joining, I have gotten to know just about everyone on the department. It’s almost like a little family up there. Everyone knows who you are, what you like to do, etc.
There are multiple members of the BFD that are also members of the Gould community. Doug (’13), Sawyer (’14), Ryan Laperle, Shannon Sumner, Randy Autrey, and, fellow glogger, Doug Alford. We were nicknamed the GAFD (Gould Academy Fire Department). We have sent in a request to our Chief for our own station and truck on campus! Stay tuned for how that turns out….(never ever going to happen).
Here are some pictures of our gear and the station:
My advice for this week: find something that’s bigger than yourself, become a part of it, and fall in love with it.
Until Next Week,
P.S. We might have some fun training exercises in the future that I will hopefully share with you all.
