Taking time to say “thanks”…

February 16, 2008

We are on that winter term freight train with things moving along so fast that at times it is hard to stop and take stock, to smell the proverbial roses. So this week, while my class works on their final test for the term, I have stopped to reflect for a few minutes. (My students are choosing an Asian country to start a technology business in and another that they don’t want to do business in.)

I don’t know if you have noticed, but it has snowed a lot this winter! It seems that just as we get dug out of one storm, the next is upon us. Yet on campus we can seem to take it for granted that we can always get around very comfortably. For this, we have the great Building and Grounds crew to thank. Usually they get breaks, but not this year. I had hoped that we had hit a low point this past week when after dealing with a fresh 8″ or so of the white stuff, suddenly it was 28 degrees and pouring rain. As ugly as it was, the guys were still out there moving snow, opening up walkways and clearing roofs. Just when things got really slippery, the sander broke. The guys were there for the rest of us, spreading the sand and salt by hand. They have been terrific. None of the rest of us have any right to complain after what these guys have been through. So thanks to Maynard and the guys. If you get a chance, make sure to let them know that you appreciate their efforts.

There are lots of others who have done great things that deserve our appreciation, but this week I want to focus attention on recognizing the guys who help get us through the winter. Thanks.

I hope that the guys have a great weekend!
