Athletes and coaches at the Austria training camp had the opportunity to go to Sölden to watch the women’s World Cup opening GS. We rose early on Saturday morning and joined the hordes of people anxious to attend the festivities!
We arrived just in time to watch the forerunners.
Mikaela Shiffrin, wearing bib number one, laid down the fastest first run!
The GACP group enjoyed the festive European atmosphere. Lederhosen were worn with style and pride.
The lone American flag in the crowd was ours. There was a sizable French contingent who were happy to adopt Zach (and his flag) as well as paint most of our group’s faces with red, white and blue (hmm..looked suspiciously like French flags but the colors were perfect).
The crowd went absolutely wild when Shiffrin came through the finish of her second run and tied Austrian Anna Fenninger! Shiffrin had won her first World Cup GS and we were there to witness it! Waiting around after the race, the boys managed to get selfies with Julia Mancuso and Shiffrin (oh, yeah!)
Ryan and Tucker managed to get interviewed and featured on the Jumbotron in their “Traditional Austrian Clothing”! We all had an incredible day in Sölden!!
