Painters, Players and Poets Comes to Gould Academy
This Friday we will hold a public opening for Painters, Players and Poets at our Owen Art Gallery from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
All are welcome.
As stated on their website, “the exhibit is a collaboration that celebrates artists from around Maine including 16 Maine painters, nine Maine players/composers, seven Maine poets and 16 Maine chair makers.”
Contributing artists who will be an attendance at the opening include local chair maker, Ross Timberlake and the exhibit’s creator, Con Fullam
Among the artists who have contributed to the exhibit are Thomas Moser, Dahlov Ipcar, and Noel Paul Stookey of Peter, Paul, and Mary.
So how did this all begin?
Again from the their website, in 2009 musician and producer Con Fullam asked several well-known Maine composers and poets to identify a living Maine painter whose work inspired them, and to then choose a specific painting to interpret via poem or musical composition.
The rest as they say is history.
“I want people who visit the exhibition to take away the amazing brilliance and diversity in the arts that exists in the state of Maine,” said Fullam in a recent article in the Portland Press Herald. “This show has it all in one place — traditional and contemporary art, abstract and realistic. And in terms of music, we’ve got jazz, gospel, folk, new age and contemporary.”
Here’s a great little video to better understand how it all comes together. Don’t forget to come on Friday and be sure to bring a friend!
