On Giving Tuesday
I’m supposed to write on Sundays and yet its Monday and I’ve decided to use this post as an opportunity to talk about last Tuesday. Are we all thoroughly confused yet? Please pass the coffee.
See, last Tuesday was Giving Tuesday. Hopefully you saw some of the social media action or emails surrounding this, but if not the background here is that Gould Academy decided to participate in what has become a globally recognized day of giving first formed three years ago by the United Nations Foundation.
This was Gould Academy’s first year participating so we set out goal in terms of total donations, not amount raised. Our goal was 50 donations in 24 hours and to raise awareness of our goal we sent out two emails–one to current parents (which, if you’re not receiving our weekly email newsletter, please let us know at firstname.lastname@example.org) and one to alumni. We also used Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to spread the word through a fun, daily photo countdown starting around the two-week mark.
The end result? Well…numbers are still be crunched, but I can say that we received almost 70 donations (and over $17k) on Giving Tuesday, which was way more than any of us expected. It also goes to show just how amazing this community is when it comes together to support one another.
And, it turns out that exceeding expectations was the general theme of Giving Tuesday. According to an article on Mashable, “Nonprofit solutions firm Blackbaud, which has provided the Giving Tuesday partners with donation data since the day was founded in 2012, processed $26,183,217.42 in online donations from 4,396 unique nonprofit organizations in the U.S. This is a 36% year-over-year increase in donation dollars from 2013, and a whopping 159% increase from the first Giving Tuesday in 2012.”
Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Giving Tuesday event. It was a success entirely because of the amazing community that is Gould Academy.
Monday, Tuesday, Sunday!
