Mikey LaCroix ’16 Named to US Snowboard Team
Gould Academy alumnus Mikey LaCroix ’16, is one of the latest additions to the US Ski and Snowboard Team. Announced yesterday in Park City, Utah, Mikey will join the US Snowboard Development Group for Snowboardcross (SBX) and take the next step in what he hopes will be a bid for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.
“I am beyond excited to join the US Snowboard Team,” reports Mikey from his home in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. “This has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember, and I can’t wait to see where this opportunity takes me.”
Since graduating from Gould, Mikey has split time between UMASS Lowell and training and competing as part of the Park City Ski and Snowboard Team. He visits Gould often and hosted an SBX training camp at Sunday River in February.
“Sunday River was the perfect resort to train at as a competitive winter sports athlete. The commitment that the resort had to Gould was unbelievable,” Mikey reflects. “As a snowboard cross athlete, it is extremely difficult to find features, let alone a full course, to train on. Sunday River built us our own start section early in the season while other ski areas were still trying to open. Soon after they started building a full course for us, which very few people have.”
Mikey had two first-place finishes this season in Craiglieth, Ontario, and Holiday Valley, New York, and ended his 2019 campaign in fourth place overall for the North American Cup (the level just below World Cup) and was the second highest finisher in the U.S., one spot behind new teammate Cole Johnson.
“Mikey’s work ethic and determination have really paid off for him. He has been constantly improving his riding, working on nutrition, physical conditioning, and his mental strength since he graduated from Gould,” says Gould Snowboard Program Director KC Gandee. “We’re so proud of him and we can’t wait to watch him at this next level.”
Up next for Mikey are summer training camps with the US Snowboard Team in Park City, Utah and Mt Hood, Oregon before the upcoming World Cup season with stops already confirmed in Canada, Italy, Switzerland and Russia.
