Leggings aka “Comfy Pants”

November 2, 2015

Each morning I brace myself when I walk into my daughter’s room.  She is either emptying her closet or choosing some ridiculous outfit that a) does not fit her and b) is not suited for the weather.  This morning while I was explaining that the sleeveless sundress that she was throwing a tantrum over was not warm enough because it was winter, she opened the shade and exclaimed, “Mommy it is not winter, I see the grass!”  Needless to say, I won!  She wore a long sleeved dress today!  But, the outfit was not complete without a pair of “comfy pants”.  She tells it how it is.  Yes, leggings are the most comfortable form of pants, but people! not always the most socially acceptable.

A fine Fall outfit choice, tank top, comfy pants, and fancy shoes!

Being the history nerd that I am, I researched the history of the “legging”.  Believe it or not, leggings were originally designed as long underwear and “worn for warmth and protection by both men and women throughout the centuries” and today many people “continue to wear wool leggings into modern times, often as an additional outer layer for warmth” (Wikipedia).  HUH – long UNDERWEAR!

After leggings when out of style for Native Americans they did not make their comeback until the 1980’s and even then they were awful.  Yes, very comfortable but never fashionable especially at the Academy.

Fashion tip: Wear something over leggings like a skirt or dress, or even your snow pants – it is ok to leave a little something to the imagination…  Remember when you are coming back from the mountain in a few weeks, taking your snow pants off and throwing on a flannel and calling it good is not going to cut it! Put on some pants!!
