An Evolution of Dreams
Big Mountain skier Jackie Paaso ’00 returned to Bethel this week to launch the premiere of her film, Evolution of Dreams. More than two years in the making, and with incredible ski footage, the film explores what happens when the passion for your dreams fades. Do you just stop? Or do you search for what’s missing and uncover new dreams and goals? Paaso’s and co-star Eva Walkner’s journeys have taken them from regulated ski courses to big mountain skiing on the Freeride Wolrd Tour, which allowed them more freedom. Throughout that journey, they’ve discovered another aspect of skiing—ski mountaineering. In this new discipline, they have to tackle new challenges and conquer new fears. It is their Evolution of Dreams.

“It wasn’t our idea to make a girls’ ski movie. It just happened that we were two women who were skiing. Of course, if we can inspire young ladies to chase their dreams, that’s great, but the goal was to inspire anyone. It doesn’t have to be skiing. Your dreams can change, and turn into things that you could have never imagined. The goal is for people to realize their abilities.”

“For me, the movie wasn’t really about skiing. Yes, she is an amazing skier and it was cool to see her on the slopes, but it was more about empowerment and perseverance. I think that anyone could see this movie and find some way to connect it to their own life.”

An Engaged Community
Paaso spoke to a packed house at The Gem, where Gould students were well represented, and distributed a number of highly coveted raffle items donated by her sponsors. She generously donated her portion of the proceeds from the Gem event to the Bethel Rec Ski Program as well and gave an avalanche awareness talk in advance of the screening.
Gould students and faculty came out in numbers to support Jackie at the U.S. premiere
