In the Pipeline

May 17, 2012

Last week Mr. Whittington’s Environmental Science class held a mock House of Representative’s Committee Hearing. The issue at hand was permitting for the Keystone XL Pipeline which would be used to transport crude oil from Canada, to refineries in Texas.

The class split up into a group in favor of the legislation, another group who opposed, and a panel of State Representatives from the House Energy and Commerce Committee to conduct the hearing.

A few of the topics touched on included:

• the environmental risks of the project,
• job creation, both long term and temporary,
• investing in research for new energy sources,
• and, lessening our dependance on foreign oil.
