Helping your child feel confident learning math

September 1, 2012

As a math teacher for over fifteen years, I have found that as students grow in confidence as learners of mathematics, their understanding and ability to apply what is learned improves. How do student gain confidence? It is dependent on the child but as the linked article suggests; Math Phobic, adults who engage in mathematics and resist the urge to declare, ” I never liked math!” or “I was never good at math!” can impede a students belief in his or her ability to learn and apply mathematics. I believe everyone can learn mathematics as long as it is approached  with a willingness to embrace the process and opportunities mathematics creates.
