Gould Alum’s Restaurant Gets James Beard Nod for Best New Restaurant
Notable Gould Academy alum Chris Gould ’02 and his wife, Paige Gould, received some pretty amazing news about their restaurant Central Provisions. Their year-old Portland, Maine-based establishment had made it past the semifinals and received a James Beard nomination for best new restaurant.
According to a Bangor Daily News article, nominees were announced Tuesday morning on Twitter. The writer, Kathleen Pierce, spoke with Chris and Paige, who said this of their news:
“Being nominated for a James Beard Award is the highest accolade we could get in our profession,” Paige Gould, a Bethel native who runs Central Provisions with her chef husband Chris, said. “I am fairly overwhelmed.”
And rightfully so. A James Beard Award is no small potatoes and has become known within the industry and beyond as the Oscars of the food world.
According to the James Beard Foundation website, the Awards were established in 1990 to recognize “culinary professionals for excellence and achievement in their fields, and emphasize the Foundation’s mission to celebrate, nurture, and honor America’s diverse culinary heritage through programs that educate and inspire.”
“Each Awards category has an individual Awards committee, made up of industry professionals, who volunteer their time to oversee the policies, procedures, and selection of judges for their respective awards. All award winners receive a certificate and a medallion engraved with the James Beard Foundation Awards insignia. There are no cash prizes.”
But there are serious bragging rights if you win, although winning an Award is difficult — especially when your location is Maine. In order to vote for the best restaurant in the nation, you must actually go to and eat at that restaurant. Thus, it’s easy to gain a lot of votes if your location is, say, Manhattan.
Of course, if you’ve ever had the chance to dine at Central Provisions, then you know just how good it is and have been longing to go back since that first bite. If you haven’t been there yet, chances are you keep hearing from friends as to why you must go. Well, now you have another reason. Because, after all, every bite is absolutely worth it and every vote counts.
