Defense Wins Championships!!!
Like most sports, lacrosse has its own clichés:
“Ground balls win games”
“All offense moves through X”
“On the hop”
Perhaps my favorite lacrosse adage of all is “Offense wins games, but defense wins championships”. Since we have our sights set on winning our fourth consecutive MAISAD title this season, it seems only fitting that we dedicated Day 2 of preseason camp to defense.
The day began with a 6:30 AM team run and a hearty breakfast. After checking in with the trainer for any treatment needs, we gathered in the team room to review our defensive sets and to introduce a few new defensive drills which we’re adding to this season’s practice plans. Then it was up to the turf field to put our sets into action.
Since it’s been proven that proper warm-up, stretching, and cool-down play a role in injury prevention and help speed up recovery, the coaches and trainer are working together to emphasize the importance of these activities to our players.
Following our warm-up, stretches, and fundamental drills, we launched into our new defensive drills. These drills focus on proper positioning, sliding, and recovery (important skills for any lacrosse player). From there we moved on to our Gold defensive package which we ran against various offensive sets. The veteran players really stepped up and showed the new Varsity players the ins-and-outs of the sets and the coaches were impressed by how much progress was made in one practice.
Before the start of the afternoon practice, the coaches reviewed the various clears that we’ll be running this season. After a few more stretches, we set up for some game-like 6-on-6 scenarios, complete with endline balls, quick restarts, and clears. I pointed out some of the new NCAA rules that we’ll be using this season and how they’ll impact the play and tempo of the game. By the end of practice, everyone showed a solid understanding of our defensive strategy.
Day 3 of camp will start out with a review of our offensive plays and a few last minute details before heading out to practice. At 2:00 PM, we’ll have our first competition of the season when we face off against Bridgton Academy at Gould; please join us if you can!
