Alumnae Elizabeth McLellan to Speak at Gould Academy’s 2016 Commencement
Founder of Partners for World Health takes time to give back to future alumni
Bethel, Maine – Gould Academy announced today that alumnae Elizabeth McLellan ’69 – founder of the Portland, Maine-based Partners for World Health – will give the commencement address to the graduating Class of 2016 on Saturday, June 4 at 10:30 a.m.
McLellan follows a long line of distinguished commencement speakers including last year’s, inaugural poet Richard Blanco.
“Elizabeth is a model of our mission. She truly lives a life of purpose, action, excellence, and compassion,” says Matthew Ruby, Head of School for Gould Academy. “She is a wonderful example of how one person can touch many lives.”
McLellan, who spoke at the 2011 TEDxDirigo and who has won numerous awards for her work, created Partners for World Health – an NGO that distributes medical supplies and conducts surgical and educational missions – following 10 years of healthcare work in Saudi Arabia.
Later, as a nurse administrator at Maine Medical Center, McLellan implemented a recycling and recovery program in more than 40 hospitals and nursing homes throughout New England, diverting unused materials to facilities abroad where they are desperately needed.
To date, Partners for World Health has shipped more than 1 million pounds of medical supplies to 14 partner countries around the world and has also initiated a global education program for medical and nursing students where RNs and students provide training and supervision to health care workers in Bangladesh, Senegal, Ethiopia, and Peru.
A longtime volunteer with the Maine Historical Society, the MS Society, Portland Ovations and PortOpera, the World Affairs Council of Maine, Bowdoin International Music Festival, Learning Works, and the Portland Museum of Art, McLellan says of her work:
“If you have an idea, do it. Don’t look back. This is my philosophy. You’re going to come into a lot of bumps and a lot of mountains along the way. Just walk straight down the road. If you believe in what you want to do – do it. Keep going forward. People will come and help you because they want to be a part of what you’re doing. Eventually, it will all unfold.” (2015 Spring GAzette)
