Women’s Alpine Racers

The U16 and U19 alpine racers had another USSA slalom MARA race on Monday. This was the second MARA race of the season, once again at Sunday River.

Among the highlights, Emma Lenoel Quang ’24 took the overall win, winning both first and 2nd run. Molly Naples ’23 came in 2nd overall, and Allison Waugh ’22 was 3rd overall. Emma won the first run from starting bib 50! Molly Naples also had a very good day, with her first slalom finish of the season. Her skiing was very solid. Allison is starting to find the fall line and trust her outside ski.

Not only did the Gould women sweep the podium, but we also claimed the top 3 U16 spots—Emma Quang, Molly Naples, and Quinn Jerome ’24 (5th overall).

Men’s Alpine Racers

Gould men alpine racers swept the podium as well! Kyle Rivard ’21 took 1st place, Gaven Schain ’23 took 2nd, and Alex Baribeau ’21 took 3rd.

We had a full field of 100 athletes. (Maine USSA races are capped at 100 due to COVID.) Gould competed against Maine skiers from CVA, Bates, St. Joseph’s College, and Shawnee Peak, with about 50 men and 50 women in the race.

Snow conditions were variable. Sunday River was hit fairly hard with a wintery mix on Saturday. Even though there were had freezing temps for the prior two nights, the surface still broke away as the race progressed. Our athletes fought and did well overall.

Next up for Alpine

Next up for our U16 and U19 alpine racers will be our FIS Divisional and USSA race at Sunday River this Thursday. It will be many of our U19s first experience racing FIS, and we’re grateful it will be on our home turf.
