A Showcase of the Diversity of the Yunnan Province

March 21, 2015

Today the group and host siblings visited the Yunnan Nationalities Village, a park dedicated to celebrating the ethnic diversity of this region. While 98% of the country’s people are of Han descent, the Yunnan province boasts 25 different ethnic minorities among its peoples. The park was organized into 25 different villages, each focusing on the culture and food of a different ethnic minority.

The visit to the park began with watching an elephant show in the Thai village. While there was so much to see in the park, we saw several more villages and learned more about the diverse ethnicity of this area of China. Most striking throughout the day was the beautiful surroundings of the lush gardens of the park and the mountains in the hazy skies in the background.

The next blog post will be on Monday. The students will be spending Saturday evening through Monday morning with their hosts. We’ll fill you in on the activities the students will enjoy with the families. One plan we learned today is that Elise and Nicole will be hiking with their host families together on Sunday.
