5 Things to Know Before Attending Boarding School
Finding the right boarding school can be a daunting task. There is a myriad of things to take into consideration.
- What is the community like?
- What does the location have to offer?
- What athletics and activities are offered?
- How rigorous are the academics?
- Is there academic support?
- What is the boarding situation?
Not only can all of the choices be overwhelming, sometimes you don’t know the right questions to ask. So, why not go directly to the source? Five current Gould boarding students answer the question, “What’s one thing you wish you knew before attending boarding school?”
Here’s what they had to say.
1. I wish I knew how amazing the Four Point experiences would be — Cecille ’20
The Four Point Program is one of the most formative parts of the Gould experience. Each year is deliberately designed to build upon the previous one. To quote Cecille, “You really don’t understand that until you’re really in it. You’re in that different country, or you’re in the woods.”
You will discover new worlds with your entire class. You’ll unearth artistic talent you didn’t realize you had. You’ll stretch yourself to accomplish things you never thought possible. And you’ll design and implement the final piece of your Gould journey independently.
2. I wish I knew how much teachers will work with you. — Silas ’23
Silas was grateful to learn how flexible the faculty is and how willing they are to meet students halfway. If you’re consumed with a paper, and you have another project due the next day, you can always reach out to your teachers for help. In some cases, you might get an extension. Or maybe your teacher is on evening duty, and you can discuss your work one-on-one. Access to caring and helpful faculty at all hours of the day is one of the huge benefits to boarding school.
3. I wish I knew to bring more layers! — Nina ’23
Nina’s tip is pretty straight forward, but it’s an important one! Bring clothes for cold weather! We embrace the winter at Gould and for many, it’s their favorite time of year. Between our strong partnership with Sunday River and a slopeside competition center, there’s never a shortage of fun to be had on-snow. Just be sure to bring a solid base layer…or two.
4. I wish I knew about the Academic Skills Program — Ian ’21
The Academic Skills Program is an invaluable resource for many Gould students. Everyone learns differently, and our trained professionals will make a plan to help you manage your workload and set you on the path to becoming an independent learner.
5. I wish I knew how to manage my time — Keiko ’22
Take it from Keiko; it’s important to be able to manage your time at boarding school. There’s a lot to juggle. Athletics, clubs, your academic load, and hopefully at the end of the day you still have time to unplug and hang out with friends. Time management is without a doubt one of the first skills you will master attending boarding school. And at Gould, your advisor will be there to help you along the way.
Hopefully, this answered some of your questions about attending boarding school. The best way to get answers to all of your questions is to visit campus. Talk to students and faculty, and get a true sense of the community, and what kind of a fit it would be for you.
