This exclusive program is for the eighth or ninth grade student-athlete looking to get a jump on the competition in alpine, freestyle, Nordic, or snowboarding.
Winter Term students get a head start learning to balance daily on-snow training with a strong prep school academic program.
The program runs from the weekend following Thanksgiving until the end of competitions in March.
On the Mountain
- Train on snow six days a week.
- Work with a full-time, dedicated coaching staff focused on improvement and a lifetime love of the sport.
- Compete in local and regional competitions.
On Campus
- Work hard in a rigorous eighth grade curriculum in math, language study, the sciences, and the humanities.
- Live on campus in Winter Term devoted dormitories
- Participate in Gould traditions and community life from formal dinners to assembly to Winter Carnival.
Gould Academy’s Competition Center is slope-side at Sunday River Ski Resort, six miles from the Gould campus.
Typical Winter Term Day
6:45 a.m. – 7:15 a.m. Breakfast
7:45 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. School Assembly
8:15 a.m. – 11:45 p.m. Training at Sunday River
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Lunch
1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Classes
5:45 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. Dinner
6:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Ski Tuning
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Study Hall
9:30 p.m. – Lights Out

Winter Term and Special Programs Director Bob Harkins
Bob joined Gould Academy in 2011 developing on-snow training opportunities for visiting athletes and teams and was recently appointed director of the Winter Term Program. Bob is a former US Ski Team coach and director of athlete development. He is no stranger to Gould or Sunday River. He was senior manager at Sunday River where he oversaw the resort’s on-snow competition and events departments, and he is a former Gould alpine program director, athletic director and faculty member. Bob is also a recent inductee to the Maine Ski Hall of Fame. He lives with his family just off campus. His two sons attend Gould Academy.
